When The Phone Rings

Salam.

Recently I received a call from someone who I had forgotten ever existed. I had difficulties in searching for the long-lost data which seemed to hide somewhere in my brain. She made a brief introduction of herself, expecting me to jump up with joy upon hearing her voice.

Can I come over kak, in 5 minutes time.

Wow, that's fast. I'm in the middle of something. Later, maybe?

Ala, please kak. Ten minutes only.

She was pestering, not even a word I said could stop her from marching to my house. I just shrugged my shoulders off, put the receiver down and continued with what I was doing. I was preparing lunch.

True as said, she was infront of my gate in no time at all. When she entered my house, together with another lady who I learned later was her daughter, I tried to recall the face. The voice was somewhat familiar and when she mentioned a name, it triggered my memory of someone who had been my staff long ago. She was her sister.

We sat down. She talked and I listened. Infact, from the moment she mentioned her intention of coming over I could smell what she wished for. And I was right. There, infront of me, she was mellancholicly narrating her unfortunate life. It made me feel uneasy. The ten minutes she promised had become twenty.

Upon seeing me sitting restlessly, she finally said it out.

I need money kak. My house rent is overdue. I dont know where else to go.

Bingo!!!







I am not trying to make fun of somebody's imperfects life. It's just that... it must has taken her a gigantic courage to beg for something from someone she only met once in her life.
As for me, I took it as HIS way of testing me.
